Stained Glass on Vellum, Oil Pastels & Silver Backing

This project sheet will show you how to make stunning stained glass cards using vellum, oil pastels and silver backing. The silver backing makes the colors of the stained glass vibrant and allows you to mount the piece over dark cardstock if desired.

Materials Needed:

Butterfly (SG-103)

Stained Glass Gallery by Judy Knorp.
Ink-N-Rubber Expressions, LLC

Vellum paper
Oil Pastels
Copper Pigment ink pad
Copper embossing powder
Silver card stock
Green card stock

Instructions:

A. Stamping on Vellum

1. Stamp the Butterfly stamp on a piece of vellum with the Copper Pigment ink.
2. Emboss with copper embossing powder. This will emulate the lead lines in a stained glass.
I use the same color ink and embossing powder in case I miss a little spot...
3. Trim the vellum closeto the stamped image.

B. Coloring the Design with Oil Pastels

Flip the vellum over, color with oil pastel sticks on the back side. You can blend the pastels with those pointy rolled up paper stumps. You can find the blending stumps at any art supply store.
You can mix a couple of colors together in each section or simply blend the color lighter in spots to provide some shading.
I used pinks, purples and greens for this card.

C. Layering the cardstock and vellum

1. Cut a piece of silver cardstock exactly the same size as the vellum. adhere the vellum to the silver backing. The painted part of the card should be facing the silver backing, so there is no need to spray the piece with fixative.
The silver background wil make the stained glass piece look vibrant and allows you to place it over  darker colored cardstock!
2. Use a glue stick or double sided tape to adhere. If using tape, make sure it doesn't overlap into the "unpainted" areas or it will show through.
3. Center the stained glass image and silver cardstock piece onto the green card, adhere with your favorite adhesive.

C. Variation

You could cut out a window in the green card, and mount the piece behind it so it looks like a window from the front of the card. If you are going to do this, be sure to trim the vellum stamped piece a bit larger, and cut the silver backing in the same size as the card front. This way the inside of the card looks finished.

That's it!!
